First off, you MUST have direct sunlight all day long for vegetables to thrive. Therefore, use only the space that has no shade. And don't worry if it seems small! You'll grow twice the food in one fourth the space others are using, so just do it right in the space you

have. And actually, starting small is a good idea anyway! It's easier, more fun, and won't wear you out!

Level ground, or something with a slight Southern slope is best, in order to catch the sun's strongest rays, and to avoid rapid water run-off that will wash out your soil, seeds, and seedlings.

Begin by clearing your ground of EVERYTHING! No weeds, rocks, or anything else is allowed.

"Cleanliness is next to godliness" certainly applies here, and you surely want your garden to be a thing of beauty, as well as being productive!

Measure and stake the perimeter of your garden. This gives you an important starting point for figuring out how many soil-beds you can have, and then placing them properly. Let's use
25' X 35' as an example of what your garden area might be.

It doesn't really matter what direction your beds face, so far as sun exposure is concerned.

What does matter, though, is that the beds be level, and that you plant taller plants to the North or East of shorter plants. This is to assure that taller plants don't shade shorter
plants, and rob them of essential sunlight. So, align your beds to maximize those factors as much as possible.

I'll assume we are able to run the beds lengthwise along the 35' dimension. Your soil-beds should be 18" wide and any length you choose. When you become experienced in this method of growing, and want to specialize in growing certain crops all the time, you may want to begin using 4'-wide beds, but let's stick to the best family garden layout for now.

The ideal size for aisles is 3.5', and since we have 25' width in our example garden, this will give us 5 - 18" beds with 3 ' aisles. If you have only 23' you could get by with aisles a little narrower. But don't squeeze those aisles! You will be growing plants that need all of that space, and reducing the aisle space only leads to problems of not enough light and air for your growing plants!

We'll make our beds 30' long. This leaves us 2.5' on each end of the garden for walking, and 30' is a good length, because it makes caring for the garden easy. More about that later.

Using 18"-long stakes, stake your 5 - 18" X 30' beds, with 4 stakes per bed.

Apply 32 ounces of the Mittleider Pre-Plant Mix, and 16 ounces of Weekly Feed Mix to the soil under your strings. This amounts to about 1 ounce and half ounce per running foot of those VERY important natural mineral nutrients. Dig or till the soil of your soil-bed to a depth of at least 8".

Then, using nylon string, tie strings between the stakes, to outline your soil-beds.
Begin making raised, ridged beds by pulling about 2+ inches of dirt from the aisles into the 18"-wide bed area under your strings. Smooth and level that dirt, and then check the level of your bed area. It must be level to make watering easy and efficient, so don't ignore this step! Move dirt from the high spots in your bed to the low spots, until your bed is no more than one inch higher at the water-source end than the other end.

Make 4"-high ridges all around your bed by pulling soil from the center of the bed to just beneath the strings. When you're finished you should have a planting area that is about 12" wide and between 1 and 2" above the level of the aisles, with 4" ridges, the top of which are 18" apart. Re-check the level of your planting area, and move soil as necessary to keep the bed level from end to end.

So we start off and we write a 100% unique and informative article lets say on Article directory submission.

What should you do first?
This is what I suggest.
1. Submit to Ezine articles
2. After it is approved modify and lengthen the article Post to your main website ping the engines and social media/bookmarking sites. (I use Pingmyblog and Ping.fm)
3. Add the article to any free blogs you might have.
4. Using the article create a Squidoo lens or Hubpage or both. If you can modify the article again while keeping the core points do so.
5. Take this article especially if it is a “How to” and put it into a Future interview questions folder. You will be seeking out experts in your niche and also networking with people who can interview you in the future.
6. Can this article be a future video? If so put the article into your future videos folder.

The key point is one article with a small amount of effort can be used multiple times and also form the outline for future content creation. Now we have written, Podcast, and Video.

One thing I really like about Ezinearticles is that they have taken the time to create How to videos so please watch the videos and write some articles then you will start to get traffic to your website.

The beauty is once your reach Platinum author status you can submit as many articles for as many websites as you like.

2. Being a "Gentlemen Farmer", and Technology activist for Non-Profits.

3. Yes I have no children but lots of family and many, many good people I have met in this journey. I would not be writing this if not for hundreds of great people I have met and learned from along the path.

How to Create Your Own Podcast

But first, what is podcasting?

Podcasting is a relatively new kind of technology so here is a bit of background for those who haven't come across this term yet. The definition on wikipedia is pretty good:

"Podcasting" is making audio files (most commonly in MP3 format) available online in a way that allows software to automatically download the files for listening at the user's convenience.

The way I see podcasting is a cross between a radio show and a blog. The great thing is anyone can produce a podcast with little outlay and only very basic knowledge of IT. Once you have produced a podcast you can allow people to subscribe to receive updates when they are uploaded to your website. This is done in a very similar way to using an RSS reader to syndicate blog/news feeds (more on this later).

How did I make and publish my first podcast?

The first step for me was research. I wanted to find out what other podcasts sounded like and what other people were already doing (particularly in my field of personal finance). This was also a useful activity to remove any fears that all of the podcasts already produced would be of a highly professional quality - some are, but most are not!

Once I had established that nobody else was doing what I planned to do (with the exception of Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, but this is more about saving money than financial planning) it was time to work out how to record my first show.

I planned to record ten minute shows which would cut down on production time and also keep the file size quite small. Because this is an audio file hosted on our website I wanted to ensure that it was not too large (to keep download times fast but also save on bandwidth restraints).

To record the content for my podcast I first tried using 'Sound Recorder' that comes with Windows XP. This wasn't ideal for a couple of reasons. The recording time is limited to 60 seconds which would have meant cutting my planned show into ten perfectly timed segments then editing them all together. It also wouldn't have allowed me to speak over backing music (something I felt was important for a professional sounding show/introduction).

I searched the web and found some free to try software on download.com. This software is called Propaganda 1.0 and it offers a complete solution to the would be podcast creator. I downloaded the free trial to ensure it did everything I wanted it to and then shelled out the $49.95 to activate the full version.

I wanted to ensure that my podcast wasn't ten minutes of me talking about pensions so I asked my sister to record some sound bites for me. These were just simple bits of audio that I could use to introduce the show, break up the content and use to finish the podcast (my regulatory warning/disclaimer).

In terms of hardware I just used a microphone headset; the same system I use for Skype. This cost me £10 in Dixons and does a good job in terms of recording a single voice.

Using Propaganda I could record content for the show, line up as many as 16 different audio tracks (including some backing music) and play with the timing. This whole process took just under 2 hours before I was happy with the final version.

Publishing my podcast

The Propaganda software makes this pretty easy as well. Essentially there are three steps to publishing the podcast.

1 - create an MP3 file of the podcast. MP3 seems to be the most common file format for podcasts so I stuck with tradition. Propaganda allowed me to convert the 16 tracks of audio I had lined up into a single MP3 file and choose the most appropriate file quality. I opted for something mid-range, not too low as the sound quality suffered and not too high to keep the file size reasonable (under 4MB).

2 - host the MP3 file on your website. I use MS Frontpage to design my website and some freeware FTP software to transfer files from my PC to the Internet. To host the file I also built a basic website page that would tell prospective listeners a bit more about my podcast in general and more about this particular podcast show.

3 - make an RSS feed. Again, Propaganda did this for me with its publication feature. The RSS feed is the syndication feed that allows podcast players to find your podcast and subscribe to updates. When you produce a new podcast show you update this RSS feed (which is hosted on your website) and the various podcast players notice the update and download the new podcast for the listener.

Promoting my podcast

Now that I had a podcast I had to get some listeners! I posted a request for help on an online network, Ecademy.com, and got some very useful responses. It seems that the main podcast directory is Apples iTunes so I started there. It is really easy to get listed as all they need to know is the links to your podcast, website and RSS feed. There is a vetting process so I had to wait a couple of days to get listed but by Sunday morning I found my link and was able to use iTunes to download, listen to and subscribe to my podcast.

There are loads of other podcast directories but one that caught my attention was Britcaster.com. As this only lists UK podcasts (most of the directories, including iTunes, are US centric) it should result in a more relevant audience.

As well as listing in the various directories I added a blog on my website and a mention on my Ecademy signature. The combined effect of these two items is to get a high result on google.co.uk when the search term 'personal finance podcast' is used.

I think that I had a fairly good story to tell the press now as this is a first for a UK podcast (personal finance from an Independent Financial Adviser). I have already had some positive responses from the trade press so this week I plan to move onto the consumer financial press.

What next?

Well, apart from working on show number two I plan to improve the production quality of the show as time goes on. I might consider getting some 'jingles' produced that I can mix into the show to improve the feel and quality of the production. There is, of course, a business motive for producing this podcast as (I hope) it will lead to new enquiries and a higher profile on the web and in the press.

For anyone who is considering their own podcast (or has read this article and thinks it might be something they could do) I would suggest go for it! Podcasting is still in a very early stage and not many people in the UK have caught onto the technology just yet. With the explosion in iPod and other MP3 player ownership all of the predictions are for massive growth in the podcast market.

Because relatively few people produce their own podcasts now is a good time to get your own show up and running before your competitors catch onto the idea.

If you want to run shallow rivers, you need a jet boat. Jet boats come in different types and sizes, but they all have one thing in common – they depend on a high-pressure column of water pushed out of the engine to propel the boat. They can run in less water depth because there is no prop and lower unit hanging down to snag the river bottom. With the right boat, a highly skilled driver, and a consistent bottom, you can run in as little as two-to-three inches of water.
Jet engines come in two varieties – inboard and outboard. Regardless of the type of motor, the jet system consumes about 30% of the engines horsepower while taking in the water and accelerating it out the back. A 50HP outboard fitted with a jet unit will make about 35HP at the nozzle. Other typical combinations you see are 25/20, 60/40, 90/65, 115/80, 150/105, and 200/140.

Inboard jets usually consist of automotive style engines that are “marinized” for use in boats and to which are fitted jet pump systems. The most common brands of jet pumps in our area are Kodiak and Hamilton. Both are excellent systems, have different characteristics, work well, and have their share of dedicated and vocal advocates. Inboard engine horsepower ratings start around 225HP and go up to 425HP in the boats that we sell.

A hybrid design that has really caught on in the last couple of years is Mercury’s SportJet. With this package Mercury has taken a 2-stroke outboard powerhead and mated it to a proprietary, highly efficient pump system. The result is a fairly small but powerful system that works really well in 18’ to 20’ boats. The SportJet 175 is a carbureted, oil-injected motor, while the 240 is an oil-inject EFI motor. While significantly more expensive, the 240 SportJet really packs a punch, is fairly quiet, and gets excellent fuel mileage for a 2-stroke.

Which motor to pick? Personal preferences reign. For small boats outboards are the answer because of weight. They work well on boats up to about 21’. In the middle range, walk-through windshield style hulls in 18’ to 20’ the Merc SportJet packages are great. The engine/pump systems weigh less than half what even the smallest marinized automotive-style engine weighs and take up a lot less room inside the boat. For larger boats, where you want to take a lot of people, haul a lot of stuff, or drive long distances, there’s nothing like the big V-8s. They run good, they sound good, and they provide the kind of real push you need to operate a boat of that caliber. A classic setup would be a Bosch port-fuel-injected 350 that makes about 330HP with either a 3-stage Kodiak or Hamilton 212 Turbo pump; this is a very satisfying yet still fairly economical package in a 21’ or 22’ riverboat.

You can buy a jet boat at AMDS that ranges anywhere in size from 14’ to 24’. Hull styles include flat-bottomed jons, tunnel jons, and Skiff or Sport styles with 5 degree or 12 degree bottoms. For someone looking for the proverbial “all-around boat,” a 21’ to 24’ inboard with 12 degree V makes a reasonable compromise. One of the beauties of inboard (4-stroke) power is the ready availability of cabin heat and defrost. Having that blast of warm air on a chilly morning is a really nice touch.
